SBLM’s commitment to sustainability is demonstrated by the firm’s staff of LEED accredited personnel as well as the firm’s portfolio of environmentally sensitive work, which spans over the past decade. In 2006, SBLM became a pioneer in the development of the United States Green Building Council’s LEED for Retail and LEED Volume Program. SBLM continues its work on new innovative programs with the USGBC including a new development that will be announced in 2013. Our firm also has an internal Stewards of Sustainability Committee who keep the firm updated on the latest advances in green technology, materials, and practices. SBLM has registered for the AIA 2030 Commitment to achieve carbon neutrality on all projects and firm operations by the year 2030.
SBLM has extensive experience with NYC’s Green Schools Guide and Rating System, which unites the standards of LEED and CHPS (Collaborative for High-Performance Schools). The projects that the firm has completed, which comply with this standard are comparable to a LEED Silver Certification.
For PS 133K, SBLM created a green signage system that serves as a learning tool for children to learn about sustainability and its effect on the environment, both locally and globally. The signs illustrate the many strategies SBLM used to incorporate environmentally conscious design and serve as a teaching tool for the teachers. The signs are recognizable in the facility by their unique puzzle piece shapes. When assembled, the individual pieces form the globe; a metaphor for creating a better earth.
SBLM has significant experience integrating sustainable features into building designs and the surrounding site. Strategies include geothermal heat pump systems, fuel cells, photovoltaic electricity generation, low-VOC emitting paint, daylight harvesting and rainwater harvesting.
