As a prime example of adaptive reuse,SBLM converted an abandoned,200,000 sq ft manufacturing warehouse into four high schools serving over 1,600 students, including a District 75(special needs)school.
This project proved to be challenging since the structure of the building had panel columns with 20 ft centers.Due to both transit and air traffic from LaGaurdia Airport, the building envelope required superior acoustical performance to deflect ambient noise.
The project was completed within 16 months. The module allowed SBLM to incorporate flexible breakout spaces into the plan and use accented color and materials to establish separate identities for each school.
